Sometimes you’ve got to go for the big loot – and that involves pulling off a big robbery.

Pulling a bank or train robbery in Red Dead Redemption is a massive buzz, it nets you stacks of swag and usually ends up with a violent face-off against lawmen. It’s why you bought Red Dead Redemption 2, don’t @ us.

There are occasions where Arthur Morgan and his gang will pull a robbery during the main story of Red Dead Redemption 2, and that will bag you loads of cash that you should invest in upgrading your camp, whether that’s to unlock the ability to fast travel of more general upgrades like adding the leather working tools.

You are also free to rob any store, gunsmith, doctor, or other business, as well as people in general. We wouldn’t recommend this as it will destroy your Honor System rank, which can upset the value of discounts and restrict unlocks, and the payoff is never that spectacular.

If you’re desperate for cash then make sure you take as many precautions as you can. Rob away from the busiest areas to avoid witnesses and be prepared to flee when your Wanted level rises. You’ll probably end up with a Bounty on your head, and that will need paying off so don’t rob random characters as you’ll usually have to pay more than you steal. And make sure you have your mask on (select it from your item menu), don’t be an amateur.

How to rob a train

If you’re going to go on a robbing spree, you may as well go big. Robbing a train comes with a big risk but it easily gets you the most lucrative of payoffs as you can fleece passengers and their items. Freight trains usually have a lock box with decent items in too. Ride alongside a train and press the X/Square button to jump onto it while it’s moving. We recommend jumping onto a train while it’s travelling between locations. If you get on at a train station there will be more witnesses.
To rob a train successfully, we recommend stopping it outside of towns, preferably between stations. This reduces the number of lawmen who will come looking for you. To stop a train make your way to the engine and beat the driver into submission. Now you should make your way through the passenger carriages intimidating and beating the passengers so they hand you money and jewellery. Some trains are guarded so be sure to kill any, otherwise, you risk them escaping to tell the law.

How to rob a stagecoach

Robbing stagecoaches isn’t that lucrative until you unlock the stagecoach fence at Emerald Ranch. In Chapter 3, you will then unlock a bunch of specific coach robberies. You’ll be introduced to bent postal workers – one in Strawberry and one in Rhodes – who are happy to give you the details of various stagecoaches for a price. These start out easy enough, and graduate up to armed stagecoaches where you’ll need dynamite and fight numerous guards.

Banks and how to open a safe

Banks are easy targets, and the pay is good. There’s always a shoot out at the end, so you better be prepared to flee and avoid the town for a while as it will go into lockdown. Inside the bank, vaults are a bunch of safes. Intimidate the clerk until he or she opens up the vault, then decide how you’re going to open the safe.

You have two options – you can blow them with dynamite or crack them open silently. Dynamite is quick but it attracts more lawmen and as far as we can tell produces less cash than cracking a safe. You’ll need to have dynamite in your inventory and make sure you stand well back or get caught in the blast.

To crack a safe takes longer, which means any witnesses have more time to reach the sheriff or call for help. If you didn’t leave any witnesses, then you have more time to crack a safe and make a quieter getaway. You’ll need to rotate the analogue stick to the left, then to the right, back to the left and to the right again before the lock pops open. The secret is to slow down when the controller vibrates a lot and as soon as it clicks rotate in the opposite direction. It gets easier with practice.

Rob the doctor in Valentine

There’s a good reason to rob the doctor in Valentine – it gives you the Schofield Revolver, one of the best weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2. Robbing the doc results in a shootout and a brush with the law, so go prepared and get ready to outrun the sheriff and his deputies rather than get in an escalating conflict. You’ll have to force the doctor to open the two locked doors here as there’s no way to shoot them open.

There are some specific steps you need to carry out which we’ve detailed below. Keep in mind that if you’ve already looted this box, this glitch won’t work.

Where to find Limpany

You’ll need to head to the Sheriff’s office in Limpany, a burnt out town. Limpany is directly South of Caliban’s Seat and just North of Flatneck Station. It is very close to your base camp at Horseshoe Overlook, so the quickest way to find it is to head back to camp and start from there.

How to get unlimited gold bars

So, here’s what you need to do:

• Locate the Sheriff’s office.
• Search for the loot box under the desk.
• Open the loot box, which will then highlight the gold bar.
• Interact with the gold bar and as Arthur reaches down, pause the game.
• Go into the Story menu and save the game.
• Now, load back using the save you just made.
• You’ll need to head back into the town, to the Sheriff’s office.
• You should now be able to pick up as many gold bars as you can carry.

I managed to pick up 30 gold bars as that’s all my inventory would allow. If you’ve already looted this spot then sadly you won’t get the glitch working for you, but the rest of you can become richer than your wildest dreams.

There’s every chance Rockstar will patch this, but until then get your fill of it. You can also find the treasure map for the Le Tresor Des Morts bonus content mission in Limpany, so if you pre-ordered the Special or Ultimate editions you can kill two birds with one stone here.

Gold bars are the big payoff in Red Dead Redemption 2, but you can’t just use them as normal currency.

Gold bars are worth $500 apiece, making them one of the most sought after treasures in Red Dead Redemption 2. But until you convert them into real dollars they’re just expensive bricks clogging up your satchel.

Where and how to sell gold bars

Once you’ve found a gold bar you’ll need to sell it to a fence. Gold bars sell for $500 each, so it’s a significant sum if you’re looking to upgrade your camp or just want to buy yourself some new weapons or a horse. There are four fences in the game in Saint Denis, Emerald Ranch, Van Horn and Rhodes. Approach the fence and you’re given the option to sell. It’s that simple.

While you’re at a fence’s shop, always check what stock is selling because they have some pretty interesting items. Some even sell treasure maps – which will lead you to more gold bars – so always see what’s for sale.

Treasure maps are usually only sold at fences when you’ve passed a certain point in the main story, or you’ve missed an opportunity to get a particular map off a Stranger. Don’t always expect them to sell maps, but always have a poke around on the off chance.

Where to find gold bars

As gold bars are high value items, they’re not found in many locations. The majority of gold bars are rewarded for completing treasure maps. The Jack Hall Gang treasure map pays out two gold bars at the end, while The Poisonous Trail Treasure Hunt coughs up a whopping four gold bars.

The biggest payout of gold bars is by completing the Le Tresor Des Morts treasure map, but that is a mission that was only available to those who preordered the Special and Ultimate Editions of Red Dead Redemption 2.

There’s a glitch that will give you unlimited gold bars, so make the most of it before it gets patched out!

There are a few other locations where you can find gold bars too – if you search the derailed train in Granite Pass you’ll find two gold bars which you can then take to a fence.

How to make money fast

Prosperity is at the heart of the Wild West, even when you’re an outlaw. So here are the fastest ways to make money in Red Dead Redemption 2.

You’ll need a fistful of dollars – or maybe a fistful of dollars more – to upgrade your camp, buy supplies and take part in poker games throughout Arthur Morgan’s journey.

If you’re more concerned about achieving a high honour status as opposed to living a life of crime, you’ll need to find a stable and legal source of income, or at least find some treasure maps that lead to some good loot.

Of course, you could just rob everyone and everything in sight. Outlaw Country!

Best ways to make money in Red Dead Redemption 2

Trade

You can sell horses and coaches to make money, as well as selling high-quality items like pocket watches, Legendary animal pelts and selling any fish that you catch. As you complete missions and side quests you’ll be rewarded along the way and you’ll make a fair bit, so these tips are more about earning a little extra pocket money.

You’ll need to find the Trapper to sell your pelts and craft some funky gear.
You can also fence your looted items because crime does pay in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Minigames

Whether it’s five finger fillet, dominoes or poker, you can play for high stakes in Red Dead Redemption 2’s minigames. You can practice in camp before taking on the big leagues.

Helping people

If you find a snake bite or bear trap victim, it’s worth helping them to get a few unexpected rewards a couple of days later should you find the person. They’ll buy a sweet something for you, like a shiny new gun or a hat, and you can either keep this nice reward or sell it.
Some people will also give you information if you help them, sometimes about trains or homesteads you can rob so there’s always that.

Wanted Bounties

Fulfilling a Wanted Bounty contract is a reliable and semi-repeatable way of earning cash in Red Dead Redemption 2. You can find Wanted posters hanging in the sheriff’s office – just make sure there isn’t one for you!
Once you’ve picked up a Bounty, it will appear on your map and you can travel to the location to complete it. Sometimes you need to hunt people and bring them back alive, which means hogtying someone up and riding back to the sheriff’s office with them protesting on the back of your horse.
They usually pay around $25 dollars which isn’t bad considering a lot of the menial tasks you can complete that don’t pay as well.

Gold bars

Gold bars were a lucrative source of income back in the old West, and there are quite a few to be found in Red Dead Redemption 2. You’ll usually find them at the end of a treasure map and a few other quest lines.

Hidden treasure

There’s a derailed train in the North of the map that has some valuable loot on board as well as two gold bars. You’ll need to do a bit of climbing to find them but we promise it’s worth it.
There’s also a Whisky Tree with dozens of bottles swinging from its branches which a little gold nugget hid inside.

Crime

As you’re part of a gang of outlaws, you can, of course, choose to go on a crime spree. You can rob stores, stagecoaches and even trains should you wish. The only downside is that you might get caught and have a massive bounty on your head which can limit some of the quests you can pick up and may cost you more money in the long term, as well as ruining your honour system.

Bandit camps are also worth robbing. You can identify them by campfires and smoke on the map and they almost always have a strong box with some valuable loot inside. These camps can be pretty large so there will be a load of bodies to loot, too.

On that note, you should always loot every person you kill because, let’s be honest, it’s no good to them now.
