How to get the best ending

Obviously, spoilers for Red Dead Redemption 2 follow – big, whopping spoilers that you won’t want to read unless you’re looking to get the best ending
.
Right, our cowboy gloves are off. You’ve been warned.

During Arthur’s final mission in Chapter 6, you are presented with a choice: help John or follow the money.

Help John

If you decide to help John, you will fight your way up the mountain with him before agreeing to hold off the Pinkerton agents to allow him to escape.
Once you’ve fought them off, Micah will turn up for a scrap. Arthur still dies if you win the fight, but he gets a peaceful death, looking out over the mountain.

Go for the money

If you go for the money, it plays out largely the same. The difference is that you fight back to the camp and head into the cave for the money. On the way out, you fight Micah in the burning remnants of the camp.

Which Red Dead Redemption 2 ending is the best?

While they’re both similar, helping John feels much more in line with Arthur’s character at this point. He’s seeking redemption, he’s a dying man, why would he even need the money?

If you’re looking for a bittersweet payoff, I’d recommend going down the John route, which seems to be the canon choice – after all, it’s the option the game selects if you don’t choose.

Arthur also makes it clear throughout the story that he isn’t a fan of revenge, so why would he go hunting for Micah instead of helping his friend? Exactly. You know what to do.

Once you’ve done this, the game isn’t over – you still have two entire epilogue chapters where you play as John Marston. Still, the end of Chapter 6 is the end of Arthur’s story, and John’s chapters are much more linear. Now go have a cry.

Should you kill or spare O’Driscoll?

Red Dead Redemption 2: Should you kill or spare O’Driscoll in Chapter 1

With the wait finally over, it’s time to don a big iron and raise the curtain on Rockstar’s latest wild west adventure: Red Dead Redemption 2. The story begins in the middle of a blizzard, with our new protagonist Arthur Morgan and gang leader Dutch searching a homestead for supplies. When Morgan’s jumped by one of the O’Driscoll boys in the barn, you’re presented with the first big choice in the game – whether to kill or spare O’Driscoll in chapter 1.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Should you kill or spare the O’Driscoll

The first main choice in a game is always met with the most trepidation since you’re never quite sure of the moral rules of the world you’re stepping into. Luckily though, you’re not punished too harshly for your choices in RDR2, especially this first one.
For our review we played the whole of Red Dead Redemption 2, and there don’t seem to be any repercussions either way for sparing or killing O’Driscoll in chapter 1. This means you’re free to make the choice that you think fits most closely with Arthur Morgan’s character – whether that’s choking the man out in cold blood or letting him freeze in the hinterland.

Over the rest of Red Dead Redemption 2 however, your actions – big and small – will carry more weight. This is because of the returning Honor System in RDR2, which gives you certain bonuses based on how people perceive you in the world.

Many story missions affect your Honor Rank, giving you the chance to do the right thing and help people for a boost, or give them the boot if you’re feeling surly. Honorable Arthurs get things like discounts from shopkeepers, while dishonourable rogues tend to find more booze and cigs.

To sum up though; don’t worry too much about whether to kill or spare O’Driscoll in the barn in chapter 1, but pay mind to the choices you make in the game in future.

Obviously, the following is something you don’t want to read if you’d like to go in completely blind, but we’ll do our best to avoid spoiling specifics.

Stop reading now if you don’t want to know.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has six full-blown chapters, but there are also two lengthy epilogue chapters, bringing the total to eight.

Some of the chapters are shorter than others, but some can take a full day of play, at the very least. One of the later chapters, Chapter 6, is by far the longest of them.

Generally, your camp moves spot at the end of a chapter, and you and the gang head to a new location. Red Dead Redemption 2 makes incredible use of its space, taking you to new corners of the map with each mission.

Saying that, even by the end of the game you will not have seen it all. If you want to take it all in, make sure you explore properly, check every desolate cabin, and take it all in. It’s also worth spending some time with your gang members.

If you’re looking to hunt every animal species, it’s also worth noting that a large portion of the map is locked off until the epilogue, and this portion contains some different species. Still, take your time – this is one of the most generous games ever released and it would be a shame to rush through it.
