RDR 2 Pre-order bonuses Guide

Red Dead Redemption 2: how to get the War Horse and other bonus DLC items

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the biggest game of the year, and that means it of course has pre-order bonuses including the amazing War Horse – but you won’t be able to nab them straight away.

As Kirk noted in his Red Dead Redemption 2 review, the latest open-world adventure from Rockstar games is a slow starter and the sort of game that takes its sweet time to get up to speed – and that even goes for getting your hands on the pre-order bonus items and the most notable extra for pre-ordering – the War Horse.

How to get the War Horse pre-order bonus in Red Dead Redemption 2

The War Horse is actually one of those pre-order bonuses that’s well worth it since it’s a great-looking horse with a decent temperament and solid stats. Especially early on in RDR2, it’ll likely be clearly better than any horse you have a chance of buying or finding out in the wild.
In order to get your War Horse, you’ll simply need to progress the main story of RDR2 to a certain point. Once you’ve completed Chapter one and have received the tutorial about stables, you can visit the stable to find your War Horse.
You’ll do this as part of some story missions that teach you all about horses, and you’ll have a choice between a few different horses – some you can buy, some free.
So long as you’ve successfully redeemed your pre-order DLC code that you got for placing a pre-order on Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll find the War Horse in that list. It’s a trusty grey steed as pictured above, with a white streak down its face. In the menu it’ll be labelled as Ardennes, but you can also double check it by checking its ‘type’ below – it’ll be listed as ‘War’.

How to get other pre-order bonus items in RDR2 including Le Tresor Des Morts

The advice above applies to the other horses from the more premium versions of the game – the Dapper Black Thoroughbred and the Black Chestnut Thoroughbred are found in the same place from the same point in the story.
If you’ve picked up more premium, high-end versions of the game you might also have other additional items – the Nuevo Paraiso Gunslinger, Blackrose Bounty Hunter and Copperhead Enforcer outfits, plus the Eagle Eye Talisman.
All of these are found in Chapter 2, once you have camp available to you. Just head to your wardrobe to change clothes and you’ll find these items.

Finally, if you’re looking for the bonus Treasure Map Le Tresor Des Morts, you’ll have to head over to the burned village at Limpany, north of Flatneck Station. Search the jailhouse to find the map on one of the corpses to begin the hunt.
